Home Away From Home - Accomodations in Grande Prairie
As is typically the case at Arctic Winter Games, the athletes from Team Alaska and other contingents are staying at local schools, who like Alaska schools, are on spring break this week. Local organizers planned to put all the athletes up on cots; however, when they tried to secure cots, they found that every rental cot in Canada had been sent to Vancouver for the recent Olympic Games. Instead the athletes slept on air mattresses, which our athletes reported are quite comfortable - see photos below.
Team Alaska athletes have told us that the are really pleased with the food, which is being organized by a Canadian field camp logistics company. The food is hot, plentiful, and tasty. There are items such as fruit and yogurt that the athletes can take with them to eat while they are at their sports venues. A few of our athletes complained that there are not soda dispensers in these Canadian schools, only healthy beverages like juice, milk, and water.
