Team Alaska dominated Northwest Territories throughout the middle of the game.  The score was tied 1 to 1 early on then Alaska scored two goals to close out the first half 3 to 1.   # 9 Jackson Lehnhart scored several breakaway goals.  Goal keeper Tyler Olson killed several strong shots by Team NWT.  #3 forward Ethan Cowling repeatedly evaded the NWT defense running the ball down the field and keeping much of the play on the NWT’s side.

This game was played in an interesting venue – a converted ice rink.  The ceiling is quite low resulting in long kicks hitting the low netting and dropping.  Rounded corners give a bit of “hockey feel” to the play if the ball hits the corners of the field.

Indoor soccer competition began this morning (Sunday) - most Arctic Winter Games competitions begins tomorrow (Monday).  The "Juvenile age group" players are Under 16.

Team Alaska falls to Russia - Yamal 3 to 1 - Junvenile boys (16 and under)

After a strong game in the morning, Team Alaska's Juvenile boys team faced a tough opponent in Team Russia - Yamal.  The Russian Team was very agressive and clearly had extensive experience playing together.  Team Alaska played a strong game, but our atheletes were tired from their earlier game and from playing on a much bigger field than they are used to.  For Alaska's lone goal, #3 Ethan Cowling of Anchorage ran the ball down the field and shot on goal.  His shot was blocked by the goalie, but Cowling go the rebound, plassed to #9 Jackson Lenhart of Juneau who put it in the box.

Yamal - Nenets is an automous Arctic region of Russia.  It is a large peninsula of northwest Siberia.  In the language of its indigenous inhabitants, the Nenets, "Yamal" means "End of the World".
