March 07 - Sunday - Opening Ceremonies
Team Alaska Bests Northwest Territories - 5 to 3 - Juvenile Male SoccerTeam Alaska dominated Northwest Territories throughout the middle of the game. The score was tied 1 to 1 early on then Alaska scored two goals to close out the first half 3 to 1. # 9 Jackson Lehnhart scored several breakaway goals. Goal keeper Tyler Olson killed several strong shots by Team NWT. #3 forward Ethan Cowling repeatedly evaded the NWT defense running the ball down the field and keeping much of the play on the NWT’s side. This game was played in an interesting venue – a converted ice rink. The ceiling is quite low resulting in long kicks hitting the low netting and dropping. Rounded corners give a bit of “hockey feel” to the play if the ball hits the corners of the field.
Indoor soccer competition began this morning (Sunday) - most Arctic Winter Games competitions begins tomorrow (Monday). The "Juvenile age group" players are Under 16.
